Pain Killer
Quick…think pain killer and what comes to mind? A giant needle? A little white pill? College? What most of us refer to as “pain killers” is really just an analgesic, something that quite literally means “without pain.” But what do analgesics do? They act on the peripheral and central nervous system, directly interfering with our bodies physical processes. In other words, they physically interrupt the way the body works so that we can dull or alter physical sensations. Notice the word physical…
How many of you chronic pain sufferers would say your pain is just physical? If you raised your hand…you’re lying…I’ve watched thousands of YouTube blogs now, and the only symptom I hear more than “hurting physically” is “feeling lonely.” They don’t have an analgesic for loneliness, depression, or frustration. Those anti-depressants don’t do any good either; they’re the flaky friend that might act like they’re cheering you up, or there to help you out, only to suddenly vanish (or lose their effectiveness) when you feel the most dependent.
Here’s my pain-killer for you. Hopefully my attempt to cheer everyone up, from those of us that feel lonely and tired all the time, to others who are just frustrated with the way things are, will succeed in dulling your emotional pain. Fear not, we all see what’s going on out there in the world: the greed, the selfishness, the apathy, it hasn’t taken over, but its doing it’s best to normalize itself as the status quo. I don’t believe in normalizing anything that doesn’t make sense. There’s no reason we should accept something as true, just because it’s the only option someone is giving us. We’re not the victims, we just need a little pain killer to remind us that there is hope on the horizon, that our emotional pain is just a temporary symptom that goes away with just one laugh. Here’s to laughter…pain’s best medicine.
